Book Title:
Why I chose it: Toast is an award-winning biography of a childhood remembered through food.
What I especially liked about it: I read this book after coming across a few recipes written by Nigel Slater. Slater pursues his passion for cooking even as he struggles with his mother's death. He has a troubled relationship with his father and a new stepmother. Slater feels great grief and loneliness after his mother’s death. However, this is accompanied by the joys and comforts of cooking. Even though his mother was not a great chef, the memory of his cooking sessions with her formed the basis of his passion for cooking. BBC has also turned this book into a film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Freddie Highmore.
