Ms Silvia Galea, Counsellor and Counselling Supervisor
Silvia Galea is an experienced and warranted counsellor and registered supervisor with nearly three decades of work in the helping professions.
She first graduated with a B. Psych (Hons) and later with a P. G. Advanced Diploma in Systemic Psychotherapy (Tavistock and Portman UK). She also sat for a Masters in Counselling at the University of Malta and later pursued a qualification to enable her to become a Counselling Supervisor. Silvia is committed to continuous professional development and is presently pursuing further studies which focuses on how dysfunctional family dynamics can manifest themselves in the emotional dysregulation of young children.
Silvia has worked therapeutically with children and adults throughout the lifespan and is especially interested in working with families and couples. Her private practice also includes supervision to counsellors and trainee counsellors and to other warranted professionals.
Her areas of interest are mainly (but not exclusively) attachment issues, couple and relationship issues, emotional regulation, mental health issues, anxiety and bereavement. She is eclectic in her approach but draws heavily from systemic theory and dialectical behaviour therapy.
Silvia has experience working in transcultural settings and has supervised counsellors working with migrants and asylum seekers after working herself in the field in a voluntary capacity. She has worked as a Consultant and Student Mentor at the Department of Counselling for over three years.
Silvia was recognized as a Fellow member of the Malta Association for the Counselling profession in recognition for her vision and leadership skills and is the representative of the MACP on the Standards Committee of the International Association for Counsellors. She also served for a decade on the Board of Directors of the Malta Red Cross and as a member on the technical committee for Childcare.
